A couple coming to terms with living in a new culture discover their troubles are compounded by their son in this drama from filmmaker Mira Nair. Ashoke (Irfan Khan) and Ashima (Tabu) are a young couple who are brought together in an arranged marriage and soon leave Calcutta to seek their fortune in America. As the couple becomes accustomed to one another, they learn to deal with the coolness and superficiality of life in New York, even as they revel in the opportunities the city offers them. Before long, Ashima gives birth to a baby boy, and pressed to choose a name, they dub the infant Nikhil, though he soon picks up the nickname Gogol, after Ashoke's favorite author. By the time the child is old enough to attend school, he insists upon being called Gogol at all times, and he displays little interest in his Indian heritage. Several years on, Gogol has decided he wants to be called Nick (and is now played by Kal Penn) and has become a thoroughly Americanized teenager, openly rebelling against his parents, smoking marijuana in his room, and dating Maxine (Jacinda Barrett), a preppy blonde from a wealthy family. Ashoke and Ashima are uncertain about how to deal with their son's attempts to cut himself off from their culture, but Nick begins expressing some uncertainty himself when he meets Moushumi (Zuleikha Robinson), a beautiful girl who also comes from a family of Indian expatriates. The Namesake was adapted from the bestselling novel by Jhumpa Lahiri. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

New Review For Movie The Namesake

What holds it together are the subtle loving performances by Tabu and Khan, both Bollywoood stars. They never overplay, never spell out what can be said in a glance or a shrug, communicate great passion very quietly.
Roger Ebert-Chicago Sun-Times

It is a saga told in small pieces, a patchwork of short scenes that tumble after each other almost apologetically, as if they would love to linger a little longer, but there is too much to tell and only so much time in which to do it.
Jonathan F. Richards-Film.com

Penn is just wrong for it.
Roger Moore-Orlando Sentinel

Intelligent and insightful, The Namesake celebrates family in a unique way.
Eleanor Ringel Gillespie-Atlanta Journal-Constitution

This is a wonderful movie.
Randy Cordova-Arizona Republic

Sprawling, uneven, heartfelt
Fernando F. Croce-CinePassion

Buoyed by terrific performances from Irrfan Kahn and the tremendous Tabu, the film is a bit homogenized but does a good job of exploring the dynamics of blending foreign cultures with American ways of life.
Wesley Lovell-Cinema Sight

lacks focus and never quite finds its footing
Kevin Carr-7M Pictures

This movie is not bad, I just couldn't connect with it. The Namesake is poignant (I cried once) and spans many years with grace and great acting, but it may be beyond my ken to truly appreciate as it deserves.
Karina Montgomery-Cinerina

Mira Nair's film is called The Namesake which immediately focuses our attention toward the value of names and naming (and that theme is explored occasionally within the film), but to slip even further down the rabbit hole, the more intriguing area of disc
Jordan Hiller-Bangitout.com

Kal Penn, who got kooky for 'Harold and Kumer Go To White Castle,' shows his impressive serious side here as Gogol Ganguli, a guy who suspects that his given name may be a fatal turnoff with females.
Prairie Miller-NewsBlaze

A magnificent meditation on what it might mean for many immigrants to be American in the 21st Century.
Kam Williams-NewsBlaze

A fascinating and gripping drama on the search for identity...
Felix Vasquez Jr.-Cinema Crazed

The all too familiar tale of the upwardly mobile immigrants conflicted between tradition and modernity is played out for all it is worth.
Dennis Schwartz-Ozus' World Movie Reviews

Fabulous immigrant-family saga to see with teens.
Sandie Angulo Chen-Common Sense Media

This is a film made with obvious care and affection, both for the specifics of the story and the broader society it depicts.
Tim Brayton-Antagony & Ecstasy

Una película fresca, reveladora, emotiva, graciosa, encantadora, que se disfruta como un viaje o como un viejo libro que nos han dejado guardado para abrir, por primera vez, en el momento justo.
Enrique Buchichio-Uruguay Total

A very emotionally powerful, moving film.
Robert Roten-Laramie Movie Scope

intelligent and moving
Mark R. Leeper-rec.arts.movies.reviews

When The Namesake ends, one feels as though one has lived with the characters instead of just watching them.
Stina Chyn-Film Threat

Nair obviously cares deeply about these people and, through her sensitive storytelling, she persuades the audience to make an emotional investment in them as well.
James Sanford-Kalamazoo Gazette

Nair may have bitten off more than she -- or anyone -- could chew with this sprawling narrative, but she's done as right by it as possible.
Ken Hanke-Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)

It is a considerable achievement, assured, moving, often very funny.
Philip French-Observer [UK]
