Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro returns to the phantasmagorical cinema that defined such early fare as Cronos and The Devil's Backbone with this haunting fantasy-drama set in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War and detailing the strange journeys of an imaginative young girl who may be the mythical princess of an underground kingdom. Her mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil), recently remarried to sadistic army captain Vidal (Sergi Lpez) and soon to bear the cruel military man's child, shy young Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) is forced to entertain herself as her recently-formed family settles into their new home nestled deep in the Spanish countryside. As Ofelia's bed-ridden mother lies immobilized in anticipation of her forthcoming child and her high-ranking stepfather remains determined to fulfill the orders of General Francisco Franco to crush a nearby guerilla uprising, the young girl soon ventures into an elaborate stone labyrinth presided over by the mythical faun Pan (Doug Jones). Convinced by Pan that she is the lost princess of legend and that in order to return to her underground home she must complete a trio of life-threatening tasks, Ofelia sets out to reclaim her kingdom and return to her grieving father as Vidal's housekeeper Mercedes (Maribel Verd) and doctor (Alex Angulo) plot secretly on the surface to keep the revolution alive. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

New Review For Movie Pan's Labyrinth

Guillermo del Toro has crafted a masterpiece, a terrifying, visually wondrous fairy tale for adults that blends fantasy and gloomy drama into one of the most magical films to come along in years.
David Germain-Associated Press

This is a fantasy realm so fully and elegantly realized, it might be the adaptation of a classic novel. Yet the source is Del Toro's own capacious imagination.
Mary Corliss-TIME Magazine

Pan's Labyrinth suggests that fairy-tale violence helps the vulnerable process and overcome real-life conflicts and that real-life violence permanently smashes the soul and the heart.
Carrie Rickey-Philadelphia Inquirer

So breathtaking in its artistic ambition, so technically accomplished, so morally expansive, so fully realized that it defies the usual critical blather. See it, and celebrate that rare occasion when a director has the audacity to commit cinema.
Ann Hornaday-Washington Post

Del Toro specializes in taking horror and superhero films to bold, baroque places, yet Pan's Labyrinth is a step above his usual forays into the fantastic.
David Fear-Time Out New York

A violent fantasy set during the Spanish Civil War, this magical film from Guillermo del Toro manages that intellectual high-mindedness, even as it resonates on a primal, mythic level.
Roger Moore-Orlando Sentinel

Both magical and brutal, del Toro's film is a memorable exploration of the enduring power of fairytales.
Luke Goodsell-Empire Magazine Australasia

The close-out of Pan's Labyrinth not only underlines its status as one of the great fantasy films of all time, but also its importance as a work of refined social and historical commentary.
Simon Foster-sbs.com.au

a captivating, albeit unstable, blend of anti-Fascist social commentary and a visually sumptuous childhood fable
Jay Antani-Cinema Writer

Fully deserving of its place in a distinguished political-fabulist lineage
Fernando F. Croce-CinePassion

Ofelia's smock is swiped from Alice, her faun from Narnia, and her magic book from Harry Potter, Del Toro sets her fairytale apart with its unrelenting gore and misery.
Amy Nicholson-I.E. Weekly

One of the best films made in the last ten years...
Felix Vasquez Jr.-Cinema Crazed

Arresting though they may be, these mind-boggling effects, shot with limpid mystery by Guillermo Navarro and accompanied by chitinous whirs and crackles on the uncanny soundtrack, don't disrupt the double narrative but intensify it.
Peter Keough-Boston Phoenix

Pan's Labyrinth is a punishing, evocative poem. It is part ferocious reality and part fearful fantasy.
Tony Macklin-Fayetteville Free Weekly

Pan's Labyrinth us that such fantasy offers no real escape from dreadful reality.
Steve Biodrowski-Cinefantastique

...a dark and wonderful fairy tale for grown-ups...
Brandon Fibbs-BrandonFibbs.com

[A] beautiful but relentlessly bleak fairytale.
Joe Lozito-Big Picture Big Sound

A film with vision...
Jason Gorber-Film Scouts

in Pan's Labyrinth, the world of Ofelia's imagination and the realities of Falangist Spain are two different, ideologically opposed ways of telling the same story - a story of tyranny, resistance and the timeless struggle between good and evil.
Anton Bitel-Film4

We feel pity, terror, disgust, wonder, astonishment, shock, and, ultimately, hope. It does everything we could ask ....
John J. Puccio-Movie Metropolis

I saw better films in 2006 -- but none more imaginative than Guillermo del Toro's communal masterpiece. Bring a friend, and you'll have plenty to talk about.
Jonathan R. Perry-Tyler Morning Telegraph (Texas)

"Pan's Labyrinth" is impeccable filmmaking; it alone might be enough to seal del Toro's reputation as a master of cinema.
Beverly Berning-culturevulture.net

It contains both incredible beauty and horrific violence.

The forsaken world of Bolivian silver miners is brought to the screen in this powerful documentary. Basilio Vargas is a 14-year-old boy living in the impoverished Cerro Rico region of Bolivia. Since the death of his father, Basilio and his younger brother Bernardino are the breadwinners in his family, and they support their mother and siblings working in the Cerro Rico silver mines. Basilio is one of 800 children who regularly work the mines, and it's indicative of the danger and physically punishing nature of the work that the miners swear fealty to "Tio" -- the Devil -- because it's believed God would never enter such a place. Cerro Rico's silver miners have an average life expectancy of 40 years or less, thanks to the poisoned air, the constant heat, the use of explosives, the primitive and unsafe equipment, and the long hours demanded of the laborers (most are sent into the mines for 24-hour shifts, and both children and adults often chew coca leaves to ward off hunger and fatigue). While Basilio's more fortunate classmates make fun of him when he's able to attend school, he realized his family need the money and he's willing to endure the agony for the small wage he makes every day. The Devil's Miner chronicles several days in the life of Basilio Vargas as a document of the inhuman conditions he and his fellow miners face, as well as the young man's bravery. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A mesmerizing documentary both exotic and sad.

While political and social context is kept to a minimum, the darkly poetic images they capture speak volumes about what the miners go through.
Frank Scheck-Hollywood Reporter

This beautiful, terrible story is not easily forgotten.
Lisa Schwarzbaum-Entertainment Weekly

Guaranteed to leave you outraged at the way children -- and, for that matter, adults -- are exploited by mining companies.

This documentary which exposes the twin evils of child labor and silver mining, is a most powerful expose' of an ongoing, mass-scale human tragedy.
Kam Williams-San Francisco Bay View

The flawless progress of this documentary lies in the filmmakers' unwavering fealty to their subjects.

The film has a tendency to repeat itself, even within its short running time of 82 minutes, but is still able to express a sincere sorrow.
Jeffrey Chen-Window to the Movies

It's a simple film with a direct message, but the glimpses of the surrounding social culture that has adapted to the horrors give (it) its identity.
Sean Axmaker-Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Basilio narrates his tale with such wit and wisdom that one comes away from the film wondering how much youthful potential is slowly being choked to death deep within the bowels of the earth.
Ken Fox-TV Guide's Movie Guide

Widely regarded as acclaimed Korean filmmaker Hong Sang-soo's finest cinematic accomplishment to date, Woman on the Beach concerns Kim Joong-rae (Kim Seung-woo), a mercurially tempered writer/director drafting a screenplay during his stay at an off-season oceanside resort. Joong-rae becomes acquainted with two female vacationers, each of whom unwittingly exposes undercurrents of hostility and self-destructiveness inside of him; he then uses the encounters as script fodder. The film represents Hong's exploration of the machismo, aggression, and hostility that typically lie at the core of the male id and are often exercised in masculine behavior. New Review For Movie Haebyonui Yoin (Woman on the Beach)

Woman on the Beach, perhaps [director Hong's] most accessible film (and often a funny one, too), is a good introduction, even if it is not a masterpiece. Here's hoping more of his films see the light of an American day.
G. Allen Johnson-San Francisco Chronicle

A richly satisfying film that compassionately probes the human heart while preserving its elusive mysteries.
Jeff Shannon-Seattle Times

Reminiscent of Godard's Contempt, but writer-director Hong Sang-soo--South Korea's foremost chronicler of romantic maneuvering--is more aptly compared to Eric Rohmer for his subtle comedy.
J. R. Jones-Chicago Reader

You won't need a degree in Korean cinema to anticipate that complications will arise.
Jonathan F. Richards-Film.com

The scenery's great and the performances adequate, but wake me when it's over.
Jack Mathews-New York Daily News

An elegant serving of comic Seoul food from director Hong Sang-soo.
Jan Stuart-Newsday

Hong has a deceptively simple director's touch, an organic breeziness that makes things feel spontaneous and improvised.
Chris Chang-Film Comment Magazine

Addresses in a serious/comical undertone something dearly personal and subtle the director has to say that's worth paying attention to.
Dennis Schwartz-Ozus' World Movie Reviews

A study of mannerisms and relationships that pauses for the occasional philosophic sidebar.
Christopher Long-Movie Metropolis

Hong [Sang-soo] moves slowly but deftly through scenes rich with social games and veiled confessions and allows his characters to emerge sadder but wiser.
Sean Axmaker-Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Woman On The Beach is a stripped-down, witty explication of how we all get stymied by the impulses and options inherent in the simple act of living.
Noel Murray-AV Club

Korean director Hong Sang-soo's Woman on the Beach offers flavors of quarterlife angst and romantic insecurity for which American audiences clearly have an insatiable appetite.

Movie Overview For Haebyonui Yoin (Woman on the Beach)
Filmmaker Joong-rae, suffering from writer's block, takes a trip to the coast with his production designer Chang-wook, who brings along the vivacious Moon-sook. Soon after their arrival, Moon-sook falls for Joong-rae's advances; however, the fickle hero can't commit and he awkwardly parts with her. What had been a sardonic Jules and Jim turns into a burlesque Vertigo when Joong-rae returns to the coastal resort and attempts to recreate the original romance with a woman who resembles Moon-sook, until his jilted lover shows up... Deemed by many critics to be Hong Sang-soo's most sheerly enjoyable and satisfying film, Woman on the Beach satirizes the misalignment of art and life, as the mysteries of the heart and the mysteries of artistic creation collide in ways that are both ironic and affecting.

Two brothers are caught on differing sides of the battle for Irish freedom in this politically minded historical drama from veteran British filmmaker Ken Loach. It's 1920, and Damien O'Donovan (Cillian Murphy) has recently graduated from medical school. Damien plans to leave the small village in Ireland where he was born to take a job in London, much to the annoyance of his brother Teddy (Padraic Delaney), who is an Irish loyalist and wants to see the British stripped of their rule of his land. While visiting Peggy (Mary Riordan), a longtime friend of the family, Damien and Teddy witness a visit by "Black and Tans," British soldiers who supposedly keep the peace in Ireland; the soldiers turn violent and murder Michaeil (Lawrence Barry), Peggy's grandson, when they discover he only speaks Gaelic. Damien is radicalized by the event, and with Teddy joins the local chapter of the Irish Republican Army, who use violence to drive British troops out of the country. While the IRA is a poor and ill-equipped fighting force, their willingness to give their lives for their cause is taken very seriously by the British, who step up their reprisals against the locals; the Black and Tans even begin directing their violence and torture against women and children, including Damien's girlfriend, Sinead (Orla Fitzgerald). In 1921, Britain attempts to end the violence in Ireland by creating the Irish Free State, a compromise government which will give the Irish greater autonomy while Great Britain still retains final political control of the nation. Teddy sees this as a victory and believes it's an important first step to a truly free Ireland, but Damien sees the IRA's goal as nothing short of complete independence, and the brothers and allies soon become rivals in a battle neither side can win. New Review For Movie The Wind That Shakes the Barley

Gripping, powerful, heart-breaking.
Steven Rea-Philadelphia Inquirer

The Wind that Shakes the Barley is a multi-layered story, and the more you see those different aspects, the more you'll enjoy the film.
Marta Barber-Miami Herald

Raises hard questions about Ireland's uncanny ability to kneecap itself.
Kyle Smith-New York Post

[Loach] has made an often handsome, always sobering movie that does what the best movies do: leave us a whole lot less sure about what we ought to think.
Robert Denerstein-Denver Rocky Mountain News

[Loach is] the master of the docu-drama or the realist social film, and Wind is one of his masterpieces.
Michael Wilmington-Chicago Tribune

As frequently happens in both Loach films and history, the betrayal of ideals, socialist and otherwise, leaves a harsh aftertaste, which made me feel sadder but not much wiser.
Jonathan Rosenbaum-Chicago Reader

The film's stark outrage exposes the pussyfooting that these days passes for 'political'
Fernando F. Croce-CinePassion

Pickings must have been pretty slim at Cannes last year because Barley isn't much of a standout piece.
Heather Huntington-ReelzChannel.com

Loach delivers a moving and often beautiful story that captures the essence of the conflict, with all its unintended consequences and personal tragedies.
Rossiter Drake-San Francisco Examiner

Loach is on fire here. A masterfully executed mix of politics and passion, this is an example of that increasingly rare beast in modern cinema: a serious, thought-provoking film for grown-ups.
Ian Winterton-Film4

Gripping old-fashioned political drama.
Dennis Schwartz-Ozus' World Movie Reviews

A brutal film...deeply moving yet painful to watch.
Tim Brayton-Antagony & Ecstasy

Ultimately, the politics outweigh the poetry ... but it succeeds despite its hesitations and far-reaching ambition
Chris Cabin-Filmcritic.com

Laverty's screenplay is not a simple-minded exercise, although there is a schematic aspect to it. He and Loach want to be fair to both sides of the Irish debate ...
Ted Murphy-Murphy's Movie Reviews

The performances are shattering, made all the more harrowing by the situations the characters find themselves in.
Jason Gorber-Film Scouts

A film that shows the slow push for freedom as the sticky, messy and lengthy process it really is.
Steven Snyder-Zertinet Movies

the intensity of Murphy and Delaney's performances is shattering... 'Wind' never loses sight of the fact that sometimes a victim's wounds may be invisible to the eye, but every bit as painful as a stabbing...
James Sanford-Kalamazoo Gazette

There are moments that stir, and it's always lovely, but it's generally too remote to gain hold of you truly.
Shawn Levy-Oregonian

While the film has its share of exciting battle scenes, Loach captures them with an almost detached, documentary-like feeling, as if not wanting the thrills to overwhelm the essential tragedy he sees in the story.
Rob Thomas-Capital Times (Madison, WI)

Loach remains focused on the personal, which serves best to highlight the seriousness of the political with which it intersects.
Josh Bell-Las Vegas Weekly

Director Ken Loach borrows the title of his 1920s Irish insurrection drama "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" from a Robert Dwyer Joyce poem, and, in turn, his film is visual poetry.

Matthew Sorrento-Film Threat

Filmmaker Lu Chuan, who wrote and directed The Missing Gun, traveled to the remote border of China, Tibet, and Uygur, to make his next feature, Kekexili. Lu based the film on a true story about a reporter from Beijing, Ga Yu (Qi Liang), who traveled to the barren, frigid, high altitude region of the movie's title. Ga Yu had heard about volunteer patrols that were trying to protect the endangered Tibetan antelope from the poachers who were selling their pelts to be made into expensive, fashionable shawls. The cold-blooded murder of one of the patrol members at the hands of the well-armed poachers draws Ga Yu to a small village, where the leader of the patrol unit, Ritai (Tibetan actor Duobuji), agrees to take him out on a patrol, in the hopes that a story in the paper will spur the Chinese government to take stronger action to protect the animals. Ritai is determined to find the gunman responsible for slaughtering the animals, and for killing his comrade. His determination gradually becomes a deadly obsession. Lu shot his movie on location under dangerous conditions, with a cast of mostly nonprofessional actors. Though the film is from Mainland China, it won Hong Kong's Golden Horse Awards for Best Cinematography (Cao Yu) and Best Picture. It was also shown by Subway Cinema as part of the 2005 New York Asian Film Festival. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

New Review For Movie Mountain Patrol: Kekexili

Breathtakingly beautiful, breathtakingly brutal and simply breathtaking.
Steven Rea-Philadelphia Inquirer

Much of the time, the movie plays like a catalog of challenges sprawled over terrain so forbidding that you can't watch it without feeling a steep measure of awe.
Robert Denerstein-Denver Rocky Mountain News

An epic story of white-knuckle tension in a setting of harsh, unearthly beauty, it's the kind of story Hemingway might have told if he'd made it to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
Colin Covert-Minneapolis Star Tribune

Instead of a laudable ecological crusade, the film feels more like a futile Captain Ahab obsession, with patrol leader Ri Tai (Duobujie) vainly chasing a poaching kingpin through the harsh, windy wilderness.
Bruce Westbrook-Houston Chronicle

One of the most beautiful and disturbing widescreen epics in last year's Seattle International Film Festival.
John Hartl-Seattle Times

An ode to the great sacrifices that often accompany the will to do the right thing.

Jeffrey Chen-Window to the Movies

One of those films that opens eyes to distant lands and problems and yet carries a sense of drama and a humane moral tone that conveys an appeal that's simultaneously exotic and universal.
Jack Garner-Rochester Democrat and Chronicle

The film's most memorable visual spectacle, of a man getting sucked into a pool of quicksand, is also the most resonant. Man may think he rules over nature, but it can take him back at any moment.
Phil Villarreal-Arizona Daily Star

Mixes environmental awareness and spiritual mindfulness with its chase scenes through grand scenery.
Marrit Ingman-Austin Chronicle

A fascinating oddity, marked by amazing locales and a narrative that continually subverts your expectations...the effect is hypnotic.

New Review For Movie Come Early Morning

If and when Come Early Morning ever resurfaces on DVD, order it immediately-and while you're at it, order Chasing Amy too, if you haven't already seen it, and enjoy a dandy double feature with two country girls of enormous talent.
Andrew Sarris-New York Observer

This is a quietly powerful film about small-town Southern living that avoids all the usual clichés and makes us feel as if we're dropping in on real lives in mid-stream.
Richard Roeper-Ebert & Roeper

The baby-voiced costar of Chasing Amy proves an effortless filmmaker, turning Lucy's journey into the awakening of a soul.
Owen Gleiberman-Entertainment Weekly

In Come Early Morning, Ashley Judd delivers her most natural screen performance since Ruby in Paradise, the film that pushed her toward stardom in 1993.
Stephen Holden-New York Times

In a way, the movie itself is an example of that philosophy put into practice. [Director] Adams clearly did a lot of soul-searching as she wrote the story. Her introspective script provides another actress with a great role and a new start.
Lisa Rose-Newark Star-Ledger

Beautifully photographed by Tim Orr, Come Early Morning is the kind of small gem that's becoming increasingly rare in American films.
Lou Lumenick-New York Post

Judd surely deserves the lion's share of kudos for the movie's success...
David Nusair-Reel Film Reviews

custom made for Judd; she's brilliant
Don Willmott-Filmcritic.com

With an honest and starkly minimalist approach, Adams paints a vivid, often painful portrait of a woman who has nothing to look forward to except the next one-night stand.
Felix Gonzalez Jr.-DVD Review

What Come Early Morning does is create an utterly convincing central character, and surround her with a milieu and backstory that is sincere and convincing.
Lewis Beale-Film Journal International

Overall, the film lacks energy and the plot has no driving force.
Jette Kernion-Cinematical

The best thing about Adams' film is its unhurried, casual naturalism.
Josh Bell-Las Vegas Weekly

The writing and directing by Joey Lauren Adams express an admirable naturalness and eschews rose-tinted solutions.
Jack Garner-Rochester Democrat and Chronicle

...nothing less than a minor key wonder of a film, a character study of novelistic complexity with a sure sense of place and purpose that seems akin to movies made before Hollywood discovered its corporate destiny.
Philip Martin-Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

Subdued and deliberate, but also sensitive and quietly moving. And it gives Judd a chance to shine as a real actress again.
Frank Swietek-One Guy's Opinion

In fact this film is generally about nothing. There's an attempt to show some growth in some relationships, but there really isn't any and we're left where we started.
Eric Lurio-Entertainment Insiders

It's a Southern story, but not cloying in the way that many Hollywood versions of the rustic South are.
Glenn Whipp-Los Angeles Daily News

The film has a worn, live-in feel, and its unhurried narrative captures the subtle rhythms of small-town life. Nothing much happens on the surface, but worlds of hope, hurt and determination lie right behind the characters' eyes, waiting to be discovered.

The volatile showdown between a determined cop and a perfectionist bank robber is sent spiraling toward disaster when a scheming power broker steps in to take control of the situation in this hair-raising heist flick directed by Spike Lee and starring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, and Jodie Foster. Dalton Russell (Owen) is a bank robber with a difference. In his quest to execute the perfect heist, Dalton has taken every possible factor into consideration. Dalton's uncanny ability of staying one step ahead of the law thwarts even-tempered Detective Keith Frazier's (Washington) best efforts. But there's another factor at play. The bank president (Christopher Plummer) has requested the services of high-profile negotiator Madeline White (Foster). Despite her commendable track record, Madeline is something of a wild card, and before the day is over, this bank robbery will go down in history as one of the most elaborate heists ever executed. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

New Review For Movie Inside Man

[A] wily thriller, which revitalizes a familiar premise by turning it inside out.
J. R. Jones-Chicago Reader

As unexpected as some of its plot twists is the fact that this unapologetic genre movie was directed by Spike Lee, who has never sold himself as Mr. Entertainment. But here it is, a Spike Lee joint that's downright fun.
David Ansen-Newsweek

A slick, kinetic and relatively straightforward -- which is to say enjoyably twisty-turny -- tranche of cat-and-mouse procedural.
-Time Out

I gloried in the sheer spectacle of Jodie Foster as Madeline White, an exquisitely groomed, fearlessly feline fixer striding on her high heels and her high horse into one supposedly perilous situation after another.
Andrew Sarris-New York Observer

It's very satisfying.
Richard Roeper-Ebert & Roeper

Even past the midway point, it's all working -- it's taut, it's funny, it's trenchant, it's stylish. And then it isn't.
Rick Groen-Globe and Mail

The lack of characterization of the robbers, while true to the structure of the story, makes it seem a bit flat. At the end of the day, it's not really about anything; it's just a bunch of stuff that happens. But it's a bunch of stuff that's fun to watch.
Joshua Starnes-ComingSoon.net

An intelligent, invigoratingly airtight caper and a love letter to New York on crumpled, coffee-stained paper, "Inside Man" is the best kind of Spike Lee joint - one where he doesn't stumble over his sledgehammer before swinging it.
Nick Rogers-Suite101.com

A limp ride that, for all the shove of the camera and the grabby intimations of buried corruption, is no different from a John McTiernan Joint
Fernando F. Croce-CinePassion

... remains consistently watchable as a mechanical exercise.
Felix Gonzalez Jr.-DVD Review

Since bankrupting his film production company with dreadful movies like "Bamboozled" and "He Hate Me" Spike Lee now works as a Hollywood gun-for-hire creating a blasé and muddy suspense police drama.
Cole Smithey-ColeSmithey.com

Inside Man is the Spike Lee film for people who don't go to see Spike Lee films, and it's also a fun treat for people who see everything the man does.
Devin Faraci-CHUD

An enjoyable, polished thriller, ideal for Friday night entertainment.
Leigh Singer-Film4

[Lee] nails the irritable yet alive soul of New York -- particularly, now, New York post-9/11 -- better than anyone else.
Rob Gonsalves-eFilmCritic.com

With a few notable exceptions, there's little of Mr. Lee's trademark style anywhere to be seen. And he is sorely missed.
Joe Lozito-Big Picture Big Sound

the apotheosis of its genre, honing the heist siege flick to the perfection of a diamond. See it, and be dazzled.
Anton Bitel-Eye for Film

Supremely annoying and nonsensical.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

It's okay, if you like investing two hours in a whodunit only to discover that a butler who was barely in the picture did it.
Kam Williams-Bean Soup Times

This is the fourth time that Lee has directed Washington, and they have become as great a team as Robert DeNiro and Martin Scorsese.
Michael A. Smith-Nolan's Pop Culture Review

Yes, Lee did a contract job -- but that doesn't mean he slapped his coat of paint onto someone else's house.
Stuart Klawans-The Nation

The movie bristles with life with the meeting of people from different races. It's a Spike Lee joint after all, and it's at its most entertaining when reflecting these tensions.
Lisa Ann Cockrel-Christianity Today

Un policial interesante y algo original, con comentario socio-político incluido. Al final le sobran facilismos y algunos cabos sueltos, pero las buenas actuaciones y la mano del director lo compensan.
Enrique Buchichio-Uruguay Total

A hugely entertaining heist film, with a refreshingly straightforward plot, excellent characters, and just the right amount of Spike's snarky class/racial digs.
Leo Goldsmith-Not Coming to a Theater Near You

Bankers gone wild ...
Michael Clawson-West Valley View

A young girl learns to believe in herself and value her intelligence in this critically-acclaimed, family-friendly drama. Akeelah Anderson (Keke Palmer) is an 11-year-old being raised by her mother, Tanya (Angela Bassett), who was left on her own after the death of her husband. While Akeelah is a very bright girl, she's hardly a star student and seems afraid of acting like a bookworm around her friends and classmates. However, Akeelah's teacher sees genuine potential in her student and encourages her to enter the school's spelling bee, convinced Akeelah has the brains and the talent to win. Akeelah applies herself and emerges victorious in the local competition, but discovers the going gets tougher when she goes to a statewide bee, studying for the regionals under the aegis of strict English teacher Dr. Larabee (Laurence Fishburne), who consents to act as her coach A college professor who was a spelling-bee champ as a child, Larabee is a stubborn taskmaster who questions Akeelah's ability and commitment, but in time he develops a respect for his pupil and helps her prove her talent as she climbs the ladder to the National Spelling Bee. Meanwhile, Tanya feels intimidated when she finds the contests are dominated by children from wealthy families and privileged backgrounds, and argues that the competition may not be in Akeelah's best interest, believing instead that homework should be the one and only priority in Akeelah's life. It soon becomes apparent that if Akeelah has any intention of entering the national spelling bee championships in Washington, D.C., she will not do so with Tanya's permission or blessing. This marks the first onscreen reunion of Bassett and Fishburne since their Academy Award-nommed performances as Ike Turner and Tina Turner in Brian Gibson's 1993 biopic, What's Love Got to Do with It. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

New Review For Movie Akeelah and the Bee

Its clichés seem bigger and its characterisations broader than they would on the more forgiving telly.
Jessica Winter-Time Out

... it's easy to overlook that contrivance, because the movie's heart is so clearly in the right place.
Claudia Puig-USA Today

The latest spelling bee movie is a Starbucks Entertainment product, and it has a made-to-order feel about it, kind of like a compilation album.
Susan Walker-Toronto Star

Keke Palmer, who's been working in television and movies for the past few years, is a natural on screen.
Moira MacDonald-Seattle Times

It's the kind of movie parents will want their kids to see as opposed to much of what's playing at the multiplex.
Ruthe Stein-San Francisco Chronicle

... a delight to sit through ...
Roger Moore-Orlando Sentinel

It isn't just about the competition. It is about heart, dedication, intelligence and the pulling together of a entire community.
Robert Roten-Laramie Movie Scope

Akeelah and the Bee is the kind of movie you want to recommend to every 11-year-old you know.
Robert Davis-Paste Magazine

The best thing ... is that, unlike the majority of sports films, the film doesn't suggest that spelling has some kind of transcendental importance.
Christopher Campbell-Cinematical

It's hard to believe the best family film so far this year comes from a writer-director whose previous film bears the unfortunate title The Pornographer.
Joe Lozito-Big Picture Big Sound

Fine performances all around and smart pacing that rivets us to the story.
Doris Toumarkine-Film Journal International

Any parents wondering why they don't make wholesome family flicks anymore can stop wondering.
Kam Williams-AALBC.com

This is a film that couldn't be more predictable or more joyful. I just hope I haven't misspelled anything.
Jules Brenner-Cinema Signals

...a sporadically engaging drama.
David Nusair-Reel Film Reviews

If there's ever any evidence that originality and predictability aren't necessarily absolute elements by which to judge a movie, Akeelah and the Bee is it.
Jeffrey Chen-Window to the Movies

It's every bit as clichéd and predictable as you'd expect, but thanks to some fine performances, especially from the young leads, it is quite watchable.
Peter T. Chattaway-Christianity Today

While there's a temptation to dismiss Akeelah and the Bee as Good Will Spelling, there aren't enough (good) heartwarming films like this for either younger or older audiences.
Harry Guerin-RTE Interactive (Dublin, Ireland)

It's hard not to fall in love with the film
Joe Utichi-FilmFocus

Give it an m, i, s, s.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

The film has an important, uplifting message; shame it couldn't be encased in a less faked-up story.
Robert Hanks-Independent

There's charm in this simple underdog tale, but clunky plotting and characterisation mean it has 'telemovie' written all over it. You'd be better off renting Spellbound instead.
Anna Smith-Empire Magazine

The young star is such a little cutey-pie and the plot so cleverly manipulative that, whatever its faults, you'll still have a lump in your throat throughout.
David Edwards-Daily Mirror [UK]

This isn't a patch on Spellbound ... but its strong performances and its skilful deployment of the finest, hand-picked cliches ensures that it remains enjoyable throughout.
Matthew Turner-ViewLondon

As much a fantasy as Lord of the Rings.
Neil Smith-BBC

However eager to entertain and even to model some ways of living life, the film doesn't wheedle us for our love or our devotion, and perhaps for that reason, it earns both.
Nick Davis-Nick's Flick Picks
